People don't understand the difference between graffiti and tagging. Between vandalism and the art. Right? There is, there is, you know, vandalism within graffiti. Right? There's the tagging where you go and you just write your name, scribble it on, on somebody's property. And you just scribbled your name. That's tagging. That's basically vandalism. Graffiti art is those cool letters, you know, with all the colors, with all the shapes, with all that. You know, artists that are doing that, it takes a lot, you know? A lot. It takes a lot of color coordination, you know, color theory. Coming up with your design and things like that. Productions. So I think, a lot of people mistake like, make the mistake of, you know, thinking that it's the same thing and it's not.
It started catching my attention because I had never seen our people, our community, being painted. Right? Like, yeah, I mean, we see Diego Rivera, we see Siqueiros where he paints, you know, Mexican people. But our Chicano community had never seen it being painted. And not, never seen it exhibited in museums.
My mom used to just buy us clothes, like, second hand stores. And for some reason, she got me a t-shirt that said Hollywood. So a coach just, you know, to poke at us or to poke at me, would say, “What's up, Hollywood?” So I started tagging Hollywood. But as I started tagging, I didn't realize how many letters it had. That was not a good idea. But, you know, I, I kept that in for a while.
I think that the excitement and the interest was, you want people to know who you are, but not really know who you are, right? Because you want people to know your name, but they can't know who you are. Which is still, right now, it kind of catches, you know, it kind of, it's really interesting to me because I that's what I used to do. And I'm, I’m still like trying to figure out why. Why did you want people to know who you are but not know who you are?
